Heavy metal instead of soft rock: since 1993 the band HammerFall has been out to prove that Swedish music has more to offer than ABBA. Just as Grunge was about to eclipse classic heavy metal, HammerFall, founded by guitarist Oscar Dronjak, kick-started a new Heavy Metal boom across Europe. The band is also ahead of the game when it comes to stage equipment; a few weeks ago HammerFall decided to use Sennheiser microphones and monitoring.

Whether in Europe, the USA, Latin America or Japan: wherever classic Heavy Metal is involved, the tour calendar is full of HammerFall concerts; and from now on that means professional Sennheiser equipment.

After a brief field test with Made in Germany technology the band turned its back on its former supplier and now uses Sennheiser mics and monitoring systems.

Florian Lange, monitor engineer for HammerFall, tested an SR 300 IEM G3 transmitter and two EK 2000 IEM receivers for the monitor feeds. During a two-hour concert the combination enjoyed a successful HammerFall debut appearance after which the move to Sennheiser was a done deal.

Wireless monitoring has been taken to the next level with the recently-launched 3rd generation of the popular SR 300 IEM. The stereo transmitter allows artists to make individual adjustments to the sound via its integrated 5 band equalizer. It also has a loop-through socket for the audio signal, which means that the band signal has to be picked up only once at the mixing console before being made available to all band members for their personal mix. The expanded audio frequency response of 25 to 15,000 Hz offers a true reproduction of the live sound.

Florian Lange is completely convinced by the advantages of the wireless systems: “Everything works reliably without any problems. The frequencies can be found and changed with ease and confidence using the Wireless Systems Manager software — even during the concert if need be.” Twice already the monitoring pro has had to deal with this situation. Thanks to the high frequency flexibility he was able to restore reliable transmission in no time.

When it comes to wired microphones HammerFall also fully rely on Sennheiser models. The guitars amps are miked with evolution e 906s, the bassist has an e 902, and Anders Johansson’s drum kit thunders through the e 614, e 901, e 902, e 904 and e 905. The ambient sound for the monitoring system is captured by two e 614s.

Jörg Zaske, HammerFall’s band and tour manager, is completely satisfied with the switch to Sennheiser. “The band sounds better than ever. Many thanks to Olle Nordstrom from Sennheiser Nordic Sweden and Pierre Morant from Sennheiser Global Relations for their outstanding support.”

The winner of Sennheiser’s StageMeister Contest will soon be able to experience the new HammerFall sound for himself. On the website www.sennheiser-stagemeister.com, the search was launched for a motivated roadie to provide technical support for the band during their summer tour. By 15th May 2009 Sennheiser had received many enthusiastic applications — Heavy Metal is more alive than ever.
